F.J. Widgery was born in Exeter, Devon in 1861 and became mayor of Exeter in 1903, was made and honouraray Freeman of Exeter in 1905 and an Alderman in 1909, with his initials being incorporated into the prefix of Exeter's car registration numbers. He enjoyed substantial sucsess during his own lifetime and it is genrally acknowledged that no other artist has captured the spirit and beauty of Dartmoor and the West Country as he did.
